Moon Culmination
Trimmed 8x10 inch contact print, 1951
Frederick Sommer assembled his image, "Moon Culmination," using three distinct layers that now appear to fit together seamlessly. The bottom layer is an old piece of wallpaper weathered by wind and rain. The middle layer is a piece of glass a painter had used as a palette and then discarded. The dancers are from an illustration Sommer had previously found and cut down as an exercise to reveal its core condition.
