Untitled
12 x 18.5 inches, 1950
Frederick Sommer enjoyed the cinematic proportions of the 12x18.5 inch sheet of paper and used it consistently from c. 1937-55. Drawings were produced through various means: glue color on black paper, pen and ink or pencil drawings on Strathmore white, pink or blue paper.

Sommer occasionally explored a transfer drawing method where color was placed on glass or canvas and a drawing was made on the back of a sheet of paper in contact with the colored surface. Where the pencil pressed the paper, color was transferred. Combining choice and chance, this produced a line of constantly changing color.
