Durer Variation
Trimmed 8 x 10 inch contact print, 1966
The vertical Durer variation is made from reproductions from the "Complete Woodcuts of Albrecht Durer" by Willi Kurth, ed. (1963). Three images from Durer's "The Large Passion" series were accordion pleated by Frederick Sommer in a manner "not too fussy." This pleating caused the central roman arch in the original woodcut to be transformed into a gothic arch in Sommer's variation. While fitting them together, he looked to make interesting connections and achieve "a sense of continuity". (McQuaid/GEH, 1976)
