Frederick Sommer often scavenged the old dumps around Yavapai County looking for interesting fragments. The piece of melted metal was found in an old burnt out automobile and the engraved background was an illustration from a children's book. Sommer recalled when he first placed the metal object on the engraving, they both "opened up," indicating a structural simpatico. The title draws a connection to the Leonardo da Vinci cartoon at theNational Gallery, London. Also see the Special Insights section here. |
